Students in Kindergarten and grade 5 were treated to a presentation from a special guest speaker (no, not a leprechaun), Miss Maureen McCann. Miss McCann works on television as a weather reporter on channel 13 in Orlando, Florida. She is originally from Arlington, Ma and is a cousin to our very own Mrs. Kalianiotis. She spoke with students about weather conditions, storm safety, weather instruments and careers in meteorology. Bottom line: Work hard in mathematics!
It was BYOBB - Bring Your Own Book(s) and a Blanket on Wednesday, March 5th from 6-7pm at the South School Library! Wearing PJs, many students and families celebrated with the Stoughton Parent Engagement Center Liaison, Mrs. Caroline Curtis-Mahoney. She doubles as an author and read her picture book I Took the Moon for a Walk. Students shared the names of favorite books and families had time to read together. Thanks to Barefoot Books who donated one personalized, autographed copy of I Took the Moon for a Walk. Lindsey Mitchell, sister of Lauren in Mrs. Russell's class won the raffle. It was a fun event, and a meaningful one, too, as it gave us the opportunity to show our children how much we enjoy and value reading. Students in Mrs. DeMayo's second grade class at the South School were treated to a special visit from a School Committee member and a Pharaoh today!
We were fascinated to learn that Ramses' beard, hat and whip were all symbols of power. Mummification, pyramids of Giza, papyrus and the Rosetta Stone were all discussed. Students dressed in contemporary Egyptian clothing and learned that the modern day Egyptians believe that anything gold may have come from deep in the tombs of the pyramids when they were looted. Enthusiastic 4th graders raise hands to tell facts about Dr. Seuss' life. Below is a book garden displaying many of his books. Jason listens intently as Mrs. Jolley, the South School Librarian, reads aloud to the whole school. The celebration continues!
